September 21, 14:00: “Eastern Partnership One Year After Riga: Where Next?

Latvian Institute of International Affairs and partners kindly invite you to attend the public discussion: “Eastern Partnership One Year After Riga: Where Next? Insights from Latvia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine”. The discussion will take place on September 21 from 14:00-15:30 at the Riga Graduate School of Law (Strēlnieku iela 4a, Riga, W42 Auditorium).

The Riga Eastern Partnership summit that took place more than one year ago reconfirmed the importance of the Eastern Partnership as an initiative for closer engagement between the European Union and Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine and for supporting reforms in the partner countries. It also introduced several important novelties, such as greater differentiation in the EU’s approach to the six neighbours and strengthening security dialogue.

In preparation for the next Eastern Partnership summit scheduled for 2017, it is a good time to start the discussion on relevant topics. How are reforms currently progressing in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine? What is the status and impact of the Association Agreements? What are the next practical steps – for instance, can we expect visa-free EU travel to be extended to more EaP partners? How can the EU promote reforms and strengthen security in the region? What should be the priorities for the next EaP summit?

These and other questions will be discussed by Gigi Gigiadze, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia; Daniela Morari, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova;Mariia Ionova, Acting Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on European Integration; and Andrejs Pildegovičs, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia. The discussion will be moderated by Andris Sprūds, Director of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs.
